About Breast Reduction Surgery
Abnormally large breasts can cause social, functional, and physical problems for women. In addition, uneven and very large breasts can create self-confidence issues and embarrassment, as well as physical pain. Dr. Michele Sasmor is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Newburyport, MA who continues to help countless women get back their confidence and feel more comfortable through surgical reduction of the breasts. This aesthetic/reconstructive surgery at RiverSong Plastic Surgery reduces excess breast fat, breast tissue and skin, to redefine and reshape the breasts to a smaller more lifted size and postion. Breast reduction surgery also reshapes the size of the nipples/areolas and repositions them so they are symmetrical with the new breast size. A breast lift is inherent in the reduction procedure leading to a more normal and younger-looking appearance.
If you are challenged with oversized breasts that create obstacles in your daily life, breast reduction may be a good option to get the size shape you wish for. This surgery is helpful for women who find it difficult to lead an active life because of the weight of their breasts. If you also deal with ongoing skin irritations, back or neck pain, this surgery can greatly improve or eliminate these annoyances. It is important patients are at a normal weight and find a trained surgeon, like Dr. Sasmor, who understands their desired outcome and has the aptitude to produce a pleasing and natural appearance.
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient process, with an overnight stay in the hospital and is performed with general anesthesia. The timing of surgery is dependent on the patients schedule and precertificationy by insurance companies. Liposuction may be indicated for fatty deposites not address by the reduction procedure. This is a cosmetic "add on" to the insurance covered procedure. During the consultation, all of these factors are addressed with Dr. Sasmor. Potential risks and complications are all discussed by Dr. Sasmor and patients will see pictures of many other patients that have had breast reduction surgery.
What to Expect
After surgery, you will be observed closely in the hospital overnight, then discharged home to heal. A small, tube-like draining device will most likely be placed near the surgical site to reduce swelling. Drains are almost always removed the morning before discharge from the hospital. You will have a surgical bra for 2 weeks post op to help control swelling during the initial healing period. After 2 weeks we suggest use of sports bra for 2-3 months while incisions heal and the breasts position settles back to a normal position. The vast majority of our patients at RiverSong Plastic Surgery remark they feel much lighter, back and neck pain either totally resolve or get much better. Patients feel more healthy and confident. After breast reduction surgery, you can buy the clothes you could not wear before and feel enthusiastic about your new look. Remember, it is still important to remain at a healthy weight so the results are not affected in a negative way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my insurance cover breast reduction?
In most cases, your health insurance will cover the cost of breast reduction surgery if it is deemed medically necessary. If you are considering using your insurance, tell Dr. Sasmor so she can help with your claim. You should talk to your insurance company to find out if your policy may cover the surgery and what they need to approve it. Your insurance will most likely decide based on measurements, like your height, weight, body surface area (BSA).
